On the way by bus in Bangkok and Berlin
Moods and stories, captured in a mixed-media installation by artist couple Christine Falk & Alfred Banze, with paintings, films, drawings, photos & texts. Rarely does the atmosphere of urban mobility condense as much as in the buses, whether early in the morning, at rush hour or late at night. Public buses are a little noticed, very flexible way of transport and perhaps the most exciting and cheapest. Buses go to places that are not in the public eye, but tell a lot about each city. History, too, flowed into the explorations, especially those of German separation and reunification. Thirty years ago Christine Falk lived in the then communist East Berlin, and Alfred Banze as a conscientious objector officially in the provided with numerous special provisions „island“ of West Berlin. Then the wall fell down and everything changed. Fifteen years later, the two met at the Goethe-Institut in Bangkok. „Bangkok by Bus / Berlin by Bus“ refers to the movement through the two cities, and to the historic event that changed the world 30 years ago. In addition, the photographer Robert Conrad has provided some of his historic photos of the Berlin Wall.

Unterwegs per Bus in Bangkok und Berlin. Stimmungen und Geschichten, eingefangen in einer Mixed-Media-Installation des Künstlerpaares Christine Falk & Alfred Banze, mit Malerei, Filmen, Zeichnungen, Fotos & Texten. Selten verdichtet sich die Atmosphäre urbaner Mobilität so sehr wie in den Bussen, ob früh morgens, zur Rushhour oder tief in der Nacht. Öffentliche Busse sind ein wenig beachtetes, sehr flexibles Verkehrsmittel und das vielleicht Spannendste und Preiswerteste dazu. Busse fahren an Orte, die nicht im Fokus der Öffentlichkeit stehen, aber sehr viel von der jeweiligen Stadt erzählen. Auch die Geschichte floss in die Erkundungen ein, besonders die der deutschen Trennung und Wiedervereinigung. Vor 30 Jahren lebte Christine Falk im damals kommunistischen Ost-Berlin, und Alfred Banze als Kriegsdienstverweigerer offiziell in der mit zahlreichen Sonderregelungen versehenen „Insel“ West-Berlin. Dann fiel die Mauer, und alles veränderte sich. 15 Jahre später lernten die Beiden sich im Goethe-Institut in Bangkok kennen. „Bangkok by Bus / Berlin by Bus“ nimmt Bezug auf die Bewegung durch die beiden Städte, und auf das historische Ereignis vor 30 Jahren, das die Welt veränderte. Ergänzend hat der Fotograf Robert Conrad einige seiner historischen Fotos der Berliner Mauer zur Verfügung gestellt.
